New Hanover County was certified as a “Clean Community” member of Keep America Beautiful, Inc. in 1978 by the Chamber of Commerce and funded by a grant from the Rotary Club. Known then as the Clean Community Commission, it was later funded as an outside agency by the County until July 1, 1992. From 1992 til 2011, the organization was housed in the NHC Department of Environmental Management. Since 2011, Keep America Beautiful of New Hanover County has been a part of the NHC Department of Parks, Gardens, and Senior Resources. It is directed by a 15 member Advisory Board.
